I'm Alex. I began my career as a lawyer to advocate for people without a voice. I then moved into the nonprofit sector where I’ve spent more than two decades working with communities society leaves behind.
When I adopted my daughter, I became a single mother by choice. I thought becoming a mother was the end of my journey to create a family, but discovered who our family could be when we connected more deeply with my daughter's birth family.
Our beautiful and improbable adventure has led me to learn how our choices determine whether we connect... or not. I’m currently working on a memoir about this adventure titled Real Mom: A Modern Adoption Story.
I welcome any opportunity to talk about how we can find broader (and deeper!) ways to think about family and how we connect to each other.
